ISLAMABAD: The situation in the National Assembly during the voting on Supplementary Finance Bill 2021 (Money Budget) remained very interesting.

During the clause-wise passage of the Supplementary Finance Bill 2021 in the National Assembly on Thursday, when for the first time the oral vote was challenged by the opposition, the Speaker took turns voting for and against the government and opposition members.

On this occasion, the numerical majority of the government was 168 while the opinion of 150 members of the opposition came to the fore. 29. The Speaker may exercise his powers in respect of the opinion of the House.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan said that the Speaker has given a roll call under Rule 29. Now there is no justification for the opposition to challenge the voting. The Speaker has the power to hold an oral vote.

On the occasion, Syed Naveed Qamar, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Rana Tanveer Hussain from the opposition, and Babar Awan from the government besides Federal Ministers Asad Umar and Pervez Khattak also spoke in this regard. When the Speaker announced for the second time that the opposition's amendments would be put to a vote by standing for and against, then Prime Minister Imran Khan, Leader of the Opposition Shahbaz Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari were again in the House of Representatives from their respective chambers. In the second round of voting, the government got 163 votes against the opposition's 146 votes, thus the opposition's amendments were rejected by a majority vote.
